Punxsutawney Phil on Groundhog Day

I always like to see the groundhog on Groundhog day. Here is what he had to say. Isn't he cute. Here he is with Ben Hughes, handler of the weather-predicting groundhog Punxsutawney Phil. Wow what a name, I added the Wikipedia search on his name for past predictions. He looks like a charming big groundhog. I find their little faces so adorable. Hope you will enjoy knowing if we have a long or short winter. He just puts a smile on my face.

Diagnosis of Females with Autism

I'm not really accustomed to having or being around girls with autism. I have seen them, but never really got to know them. Parents are concerned about how they test girls and boys differently with autism. They said, "(a) their clinical presentation is “different,” (b) their “special interests” are different, and/or (c) they appear to have fairly good social interaction skill, particularly when interacting with adults in a one-to-one situation."

The Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS; Constantino, 2005) is the only one tool that is used for girls. Which examines social impairments by assessing social awareness, social information processing, reciprocal social communication, social anxiety/avoidance, and autistic preoccupations and traits.
Here is the article from the Autism Support Network News.

Auto Glass in Phoenix

Are you living in the Phoenix, Arizona area, and your car windshield needs to be replaced. Then click on over to Reliable Auto Glass. You can get a quote online or by phone. They are an established group and members of the National Glass Association , The Better Business Bureau, and the Auto Glass Replacement Safety Standards. They also replace residential windows and more. Sounds like a winner to me.

I remember one time that we had a major windshield glass problem. It was so bad that I couldn't see out of the passenger side of the window. I was never able to get it fixed before the car just went kapoot on me, but if it didn't I'd be looking for a way to get it fixed, because it is the law to not have a cracked windshield. Besides, you have to see where you are going and all. Small cracks can lead to bigger ones so get them fixed before it is to late.

Wales's New Chairman of Autism Research

>> Sunday, February 1, 2009

Wales’s pioneering work in autism has been reinforced with the appointment of a Cardiff University professorship dedicated to researching the condition.Wales is the first country in the world to have a national autism strategy. Here is an article from News Whales. Professor Susan Leekam, a developmental psychologist who has been studying autism for the last 20 years, has been appointed Chair in Autism Research at the School of Psychology.

This is something that the U.S. could benefit from in order to get the act together and decide to really fund an epidemic that is changing the entire world for the better of course. We are adapting to our environment and autism is one of the major changes that we are currently going through.

Vaccines and Autism: Many Hypotheses, but No Correlation

There are many hypotheses about what exactly causes autism. Is it vaccines, genetics, environmental....? We may never know because we just don't have the evidence to pin point the exact cause. Here is one article from the Kansas City infoZine.

It was also said that parents who do not vaccinate there children are causing outbreaks of illness that otherwise would have been prevented. Hope you enjoy this article and come back to see me!!

Autism bill defeated in committee

Legislators killed a bill on Thursday that would have established tuition-assistance grant program for students with autism. Here is the article from WPCVA.

The Senate Education and Health Committee voted 10-5 to defeat Senate Bill 956. The bill would have allocated up to $20,000 a year per student to attend any private school that could address the student's needs. This is something that we absolutely needed for families who are already having to pay for such high treatment costs as well as education. Others had this to say,

"It's focused too much on the individual and not enough on the system," Houck said. "I would much rather apply the money that's accomplished in this bill to the entire public education system in Virginia."

D. Patrick Lacy Jr., of the Virginia School Boards Association, agreed.

"Rather than dodge the fact that school systems do not have the resources, why don't we address the resources that the school systems need versus this fix, which at best is a temporary fix - a patch," Lacy said.

Feingold Program Works

Thought that I would do an entry on us again to update on how we are doing around here, I have recently changed the way I give my sons their medication. It has an orange colored coating on the capsule that takes up half of it. I was wondering if it was causing his hyperactivity, and boy howdy it was. For the last two days he has been humming around the house and being a model child. For once he was happy within himself. Dev is still missing something for now, but hopefully he will get better as time goes by. Ed is playing with his new set of hot wheels cars...usually Dev ends up with them. Ed is wrapped up in his blanked on his bed. I am still in shock on how the Feingold Program really does work.

All I've really done is taken them off colors for now. They are picky eaters who just don't eat salicylates. Thanks Mrs. Jane for contacting me on this diet. Also thanks to their therapist for telling me that I should. I started researching the colors and found Feingold. I am just so amazed at them and hope that we can maintain this newly found peace of mind.

The boys have a sense that colors especially have a major effect on them. Sometimes they want to say no. Dev is more difficult only because it still gets bought on occasion, but we now had our proof and will say no more. I myself was an active yellow #5 in taker and have felt awful from rheumatoid arthritis as if I overloaded my body of them. I will start aching and joints will hurt something awful. So when I don't drink to many of them letting the chemicals build up I don't feel so bad.
