Old Teddy IS Five Years Old

Here is Old Teddy who has been part of our family and Devin's life since he was one years old. So that would make Old Teddy five years old. So happy birthday Old Teddy. We hope that you have many more great long years with us. Devin really socializes with his teddy bears. It has helped this young autistic child learn the value of love. I remember the day that we got Old Teddy. We went to Toys R Us to buy something for the kids, and I thought that I would try a teddy bear on Devin. I showed him two that he could get. I remember the look on his little face when he chose. He was going to choose correctly, and he did. Now we would like to share his love and friendship with you as well. He looks really worn out by Devin. He really loves this guy. He wanted me to add his teddy to my blog, so I thought that I would use it in a post. He is so sweet when he plays with Old Teddy. They are best friends for sure.

Charter HDTV Sweepstakes

-1

How would you like to win a new HDTV? Now is your chance through the month of April Charter is giving you just that. Charter is offering an opportunity to win a grand prize package that includes a 52” LCD flat screen HDTV, a Home Theater System, and one year of free Charter Digital Cable service with HD programming. If a current or new customer orders Cable, High Speed or Telephone online at Charter.com throughout April – they are automatically entered upon installation to win. What a deal that one is. Charter has gone to the extremes to meet your needs that they have been known to give away game consoles, and even cars. Now that is what I am talking about. Help them boost their recognition by following them on Twitter @chartercom. They are there to help their customers in need of support. This contest is part of their original site located at charter.com. They are also giving away 30 22" Samsung HDTV's (one per day) during the month of April, so you better hurry while there is still something left of April. I would absolutely be thrilled if I could win such a package, but where would I put such a large t.v.? I'm sure I could think of somewhere to put such a luxurious thing. I would just have to remember that I could not turn it up to loud or it would echo throughout the entire neighborhood.

Banning Food Colorings Bill SD-101

In a recent post on banning food colorings, I did finally come across the banning food colorings Bill No. SD-101. This would require a ban on eight food coloring agents:

Blue No. 1; FD&C Blue No. 2; FD&C Green No. 3; FD&C Orange B; FD&C Red No. 3; FD&C Red No. 40; FD&C Yellow No. 5; and FD&C Yellow No. 6. So out comes the warning.

Warning: "The color additives in this food may cause
hyperactivity and behavioral problems in children."

The labeling requirement also applies to all menus and food advertising notices. Beginning January 1, 2012, the bill prohibits the sale, purchase, use, or selling of food products containing the specified color additives. Violators would be subject to the same penalties as those that apply to adulterated and misbranded foods. To bad that it will not be any sooner. For now we turn to the Feingold Program to help us eliminate all of these horrible colorings in our diets.

In recent studies, it has been found conclusive. The first study on food colorings, and the second study on food colorings both show that there could be a relationship between food colorings and hyperactivity/behavioral problems.

The CSPI has petitioned FDA to ban these synthetic colorings. Hopefully more states will join in the fight against food coloring which contain a variety of chemical including arsenic. So children across the world are being exposed to things like this. Even before they are born as I have explained in Autism Spectrum Disorders.. What Is In It For Autistics.

Is It ADHD or Bartonella and Babesia

Every year millions of children are diagnosed with ADHD, but in recent studies it could be something quite different. What if there were two bacterias that were transmittable by ticks. Now there is such a thing. They are known as bartonella (top) and babesia (bottom). These bacteria collect around the cell causing symptoms similar to ADHD. It usually takes two hours before it is noticeable, and is missed most of the time. Is ADHD misdiagnosed; one mother says she found a tick on her boy when he was a few months old. I have never found any ticks on my kids, so I do not think that this is a possibility for us, but you never know now do we. To get rid of these bacteria a child needs antibiotics. Yep, more antibiotics that they probably don't need, but if it gets rid of bartonella and babesia then I am all for it. So if you think or know that your child has been bitten by a tick, then have their blood tested. Once they are treated the child with ADHD is treated and ADHD was never the problem to begin with. This will not happen in all cases, but it's worth looking in to. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) is looking into these types of cases.

Autism Spectrum Disorders.. What Is In It For Autistics

>> Sunday, April 5, 2009

Autism Spectrum Disorders are very complex in nature, and are still not completely understood. With one in 150 being diagnosed, how is it not an epidemic? So what is it in for a child/adult with autism?

We all know that chemicals and toxins are transported from the mother to the child in utero. Some mothers are carrying predispositioned children that are vunerable to every aspect of their environment, which can cause difficulties including autism and other learning and physical problems. Autistic children already have weakened systems, and are being noticed when the child is diagnosed with autism. They can not excrete metals and other toxins in their bodies (even during utero) causing an overload resulting in autistic like behaviors.

Interventions such as the GFCF diet, removal of additives, food coloring and flavoring, biomedical treatment, applied behavioral analysis, speech and occupational therapies, Floortime, and many others can help with the physical and social aspects of everyday living as a child with an autistic disorder.

There are many possible causes for autism spectrum disorders, and no one knows where to start in finding the one answer the world is waiting on. Is it genetic or is it environmental? I would say a little of both. With the modern technology of foods after World War II it seems likely that the food colorings and additives could play a major roll especially with behavior.

Researchers have also considered rainfall as a link to autism. I do live in one of the rainiest states in America. Their hypothesis is that it is due to a Vitamin B deficiency. One of the latest is autism and vinyl flooring. The list keeps going on and on. I usually overlook these and say well, it is a possibility.

The most common cause (for most parents) is vaccines due to the mercury/thimersol that was used as a preservative. In 1999, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Disease Control (CDC), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) directed U.S. vaccine manufactures to remove thimersol from all children's vaccines as soon as possible. However, the preservatives found in the flu shots have not been removed. Please visit Safe Minds for more information. They are a non-profit organization whose mission is to investigate and raise awareness of the risk to infants and children of exposure to mercury from medical products.

As a young child, autistic children show a variety of autistic behaviors. What was your child eating before the diagnosis of autism? What were his first foods? Baby food contains salicylates and additives. Therefore unless you made it yourself it is processed baby food. Other foods were cooked vegetables (possible salicylates), fries cooked in oils containing BHA, BHT. and TBHQ. Read Common Additives In Foods, and Phenol Intolerance (PST) Dificiency.

You then realize that the biomedical aspect of autism becomes the child's state of well being. Their biomedical doctor keeps their bodies going. Therapies keep their bodies functioning properly helping with speech, and doing everything imaginable to help a child with autism spectrum disorder to function properly on a day to day basis. What extraordinary people they are.

I'm not very knowledgeable about teenagers and adults, but I do know that it can be a cherishable time, and then it can be difficult. At times when these teenagers and adults with autism express their sensitivities and "tantrums." It can go as far as the Sky Walker case, but it is rare. Most autistic teenagers and adults are just striving to survive in their world the best that they can. Gotta love all those wonderful people for working hard to understand their way of life. A friend of mine with triplet autistic boys is an example of how they are striving. Autistic couples are one of a kind and are striving even today. How wonderful that it is for them to share their lives together.

Autistic Son Enters Gifted Class Despite Behavior Problems

Great news from the school on Eddie. He has scored high enough on the RAVEN test to qualify for evaluation for the gifted class at school. A few years back he was tested, bud did not quite make it. We are very proud of him any happy that he has accomplished this task.

Eddie is a very smart child with autism who has his difficulties. By the time he was six months old he was pulling up in his bed where he loved to play. He would then turn and dive to the mattress. At first we found what as now a child with an autistic trait to be astonishing and scary at times. Clearly as I recall now he was defiantly autistic then. We just had no recollection of what autism was back then. Not until he was three years old that we had learned the meaning of autism. He did have problem with sleeping habits by the time he was a week old and got rid of jaundice.

By the time he was one, he was throwing large toys at me, and here I was pregnant with Devin. I always had to watch my back with that child. I still have to watch out with him today, and he is seven -and-a-half. He had behavior problems in preschool as well, which caused me to visit the school on a number of occasions. He did "request" having the words wrote out along with the shape drawn so that he could learn how to spell words. I remember that in pre-school while staying with my mother he would write the names of his friends on a chalkboard. I was astonished. He never talked until he was three -and- a -half, and by the time he was four he was reading, writing, and spelling words.

Kindergarten rolled around and he was having major behavior problems. His autistic behaviors included, destroying property, hitting others, climbing under tables, and being disrespectful. He started medication in first grade to help control ADHD which they both suffer from. Things got better for him, but he lost a lot of weight, so I ended up changing his medicine again. We are still wishing for better help which only biomedical, GFCF Diet, Feingold Diet, therapies, and etc. that can help with autism symptoms. Getting that help when you are dealing with autism and poverty can be one of the most difficult things you can go through.

Second grade is here and he has done very well. He is now in a regular classroom, and only has a few sensory integration deficits such as sounds and lights. He does not like the chatter of the other classroom children. The intercom is another sensory problem with him. All he can do is cover his ears to get away from the noise. Eddie has done well, growing up with two conditions.

>> Saturday, April 4, 2009

Woogle-Bug has wonderful GFCF recipes. They seem to have it all. Not only do they have recipes for the GFCF diet, but they also have GFCF grocery products, but they are pricey for me; however, you may not find so. So then I will share this website with you. They have this easter basket for about fourty dollars that I really liked. This basket is located here.

I thought that I would also share a recipe from the website.

¼ cup red pepper, chopped
¼ cup onion, minced
2 T. fresh chives, chopped
2 T. fresh parsley, chopped

Marek Michalowski, a research and doctoral student at Carnegie Mellon University, co-created Keepon with his mentor Hideki Kozima, with the aim of studying children with autism. This little guy is designed to do the following four tasks. bouncing, swiveling and rocking from side to side and tipping to the front and back. His eyes are cameras and his nose is a microphone. He is just the cutest little thing. This autism robot is really going to help autistic children communicate with their world. Here is a video of him that I thought that you would enjoy.

Three stand trial for gang-rape, stabbing near Temecula one claims ADHD

A three man gang rape/stabbing near Temecula, California is something that I always hate to hear. I apologize for the article being so graphic in how it all came down. As I was reading I notice that one of the men had something else to say. In addition, the defendant was mentally deficient, Bender told the jury. He was “basically illiterate,” had a “kindergarten-level” education and had ADHD, he said. Ok, so what is this an attempt to pull this one off by claiming difficulties. How many time have we read about people claiming problems. More than I can can't. So may be justified, but there are some that are not. Could this be one of those?

Landmark Autism Treatment Acceleration Act

In recent days on capitol hill, the Landmark Autism Treatment Acceleration Act has been big news at Autism Votes. Autism Speaks, the nation’s largest autism science and advocacy organization, today applauded the introduction of the groundbreaking Autism Treatment Acceleration Act (ATAA). Originally drafted by then-Senator Barack Obama and introduced by Senators Richard Durbin (D-IL), Robert Casey (D-PA), and Robert Menendez (D-NJ), ATAA is comprehensive federal legislation that addresses several critical challenges facing the autism community, including increased funding for scientific research, treatment and services. The ATAA incorporates provisions from the Expanding the Promise of Individuals with Autism Act (EPIAA) originally proposed by Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY). Autism Speaks applauds the introduction of the act. To help address the unique needs of adults with ASDs, the bill would create a demonstration project with one-year planning grants and multi-year implementation grants for the provision of service for adults with autism. These services would address important issues such as education and employment, housing, nutrition and wellness, social activities, and transportation and personal safety. A key section of the bill requires insurance companies to provide coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASDs), including coverage of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) therapy – a medically-necessary, evidence-based autism treatment – and assistive communication devices. In most states, insurers are currently allowed to specifically exclude coverage for these critical services, which can cost upward of $50,000 a year – well beyond the means of most families. I am just lucky that Medicaid is paying for what little that we do get. I have always wanted more for the boys as far as treatment goes, but without insurance to pay for these things and the money to pay for insurance it is very hard; almost to the point of not getting those extra services and help that everyone should be entitled to.

Sky Walker Poses Challenges

Sky Walker who is currently in prison for the death of his mother, Gertrude Steuernagel, who was found on January 29, and died eight days later is having behavioral challenges while in jail. So what does Sky Walker been known to do. MSNBC has just that answer. Everything from spitting at officers to just sitting in his cell watching tape recordings of "The Price Is Right" over and over again. He has also been allowed his favorite meal from McDonald's which is a happy meal, and barbecue chips to keep his environment as normal as possible as he is waiting to see if he is competent enough to stand trial. Funny thing though. My kids like chicken nugget happy meals and barbecue chips as well. Wonder what kind of interventions this boy has received. From the sound of McDonald's and chips, I'd say not much of an intervention. Could this have been prevented by using interventions of some type? We may never know.

Lowe's Motor Speedway To Donate To Autism Speaks

Autism Speaks will be receiving ten dollars for every ticket sold between now and April 11 for the Lowe's Motor Speedway. What a wonderful thing. Can you imagine how many people will be there for that race? The NASCAR Sprint All-Star race will be held May 16, while the Coca-Cola 600 is May 24. Believe it or not, but I do have a racing streak in me. Not really like the idea as a job though. To dangerous for me. I have went to see a "race" in our area that was on dirt. It was fun and very loud. There is an article about donating portion ticket sales to Autism Speaks that has Marcus Smith, president and general manager of Lowe’s Motor Speedway comment. If you are in the area for these races, then this would be a wonderful time to have fun for a cause. I believe that ten dollars is a wonderful amount to be offered. Makes you wonder how much that they will generate out of this one.

Elliot Sadler's Autism Awareness Helmet To Be Auctioned

Elliot Sadler will be taking on the Texas Motor Speedway this weekend with an autism awareness helmet. The helmet will be auctioned off at the end of the month, and will benefit the Hermie and Elliott Sadler Foundation and other autism related charities. He was asked why supporting autism is important to him, and this is what he had to say.

"I think the reason that it's so important to me is because of my niece Halie. Halie was diagnosed with Autism a couple years ago, and when she was we didn't know what it was or really anything about it. So we went out and researched the disorder and what we could do to help. To be honest it was the reason that my brother Hermie (Sadler) and I started our foundation. We wanted to raise autism awareness and money to further research and help other families in our situation. One of the biggest things that we've learned at this point is that early detection is the biggest key."

You can learn more about the autism awareness helmet by going to to the Sadler Foundation, where the auction will be held, so sign up today to bid on current items and the autism awareness helmet at the end of the month.
