UK Autism Foundation To Request GOP To Act

Poverty and autism in the United Kingdom has led to the decision of the UK Autism Foundation to request that the GOP act on Autism Awareness Day, April 2, 2009. Something I can relate to. I wouldn't say we were rich either, and these days, poverty is becoming more common due to the economic state of the entire world. Such sad time that we have to go through something like that.

The UK Autism Foundation is also appealing to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the UN General Assembly to take action on Poverty and Autism. The credit crunch and the deepening global economic recession has placed huge pressure on families and adults with autism and Asperger's Syndrome. There are many more families below the poverty line, as described at Medical News Today.

Animal Therapies

Animal therapies are becoming common with helping children with autism. I found this wonderful article on autism dogs, that I thought you would like to read. They are just so amazing on how they help with the child to cope with everyday living. Plus, it gives them a new best friend. I wish we had one, but Eddie is allergic to dogs, and Devin is just plain scared of them. The dogs keep the children close to home allowing for the parent to relax for a moment. Other great website include 4pawsforability, Autism Service Dogs of America, and National Service Dogs (Canada) Horse therapy is also common and Winslow has a great website on horses and autism therapy. I love horses, and I was planning on taking the boys to Have A Heart Horse Rescue this summer to enjoy the horses there. The poor things. Other great websites include dolphin therapy. Planet Puna is also a dolphin website. Hope you enjoy discovering these therapies and that it helps make a decision on what kind of therapy you would like to try.

Ann Curry's Octuplet Mom Interview

I was digging through my widgets and found that Celeb-o-matic had a piece on the Ann Curry from the Today show in New York City. She had a four part interview with Nadya Suleman, the mother of octuplets among fourteen children. Wow, and I thought two was enough. The octuplets interview is really something. The article was talking about a text message that was sent saying that Ann Curry really hated this women. Now that just isn't right. Ms. Suleman is having lots of trouble financially as we all well know. Who would not these days with the terrible economy. I wish her the best to her and the kids. One child is diagnosed with autism, one with ADHD, and another with learning difficulties. Hope you will watch the video and enter your comments.

School Grades Are In

The boys have done it again, and the teachers have really been very pleased. Eddie's teacher says, "I love his brain. I love how it works." He is reading at an early 4th grade level and he is now almost done with the 2nd grade. I was really impressed with him on that one. He's reading on a J level.

Devin is reading where he should be which is great for him. He's still quite a loner when it comes to social play. His teacher was worried about a gagging reflex while at lunch. She said that he picked at his food and would mostly eat the bread. She was wondering about acid reflux. I told her that most kids with autism has stomach issues and I was in need of a doctor for them. She recommended one, and I plan on taking them as soon as possible. Well, lets get on with their grades. Let's do Eddie first:

Today Is The Day For Adoption

Today is the day that I send off for my original birth certificate from the state of Texas. I am very excited and a whole slew of people are awaiting the results. If I have the correct names of my birth parents, then I am able to receive the original copy. If I am correct then I have a wonderful half- brother and sister. They are quite shocked about me, but we have become friends. No one had any idea that there could have been another sibling. I just wish that I could get a hold of my birth mother. I haven't been in contact with her family yet. Well guys, wish me luck on this, and hopefully this will be the end of my search. If not, then I have made some really good friends.

Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA)

>> Sunday, March 29, 2009

Behavioral Analysis is the systematic study of variables that influence the behavior of an organism. ABA is the process of systematically applying what scientists have learned in the laboratory to significant behaviors in real life situations, such as home, school, and work. It is to help reduce inappropriate, self-injurious, and stereotypical behaviors; modify conditions under which interfering behaviors occur, teach new skills, and transfer and generalize behavior from one situation to another.

Behaviors have definable and measurable frequencies rates, durations and intensities and consist of specific actions that can be maintained, increased, or decreased. ABA is not a specified program, but rather many different programs that follow a set of principles and guidelines. Others use specific terms to describe actions therapist take with their clients.

Components of an ABA Program that allows the program to be efficient. ABA, like other therapies is most effective with autism children at a young age. Usually it begins at ages of two and eight. When the children are at this age therapists may use ABA methology to teach a pre-school curriculum including many skills. Areas can include the following: color, number and letter identification, vocabulary development, gross motor development with essential safety awareness skills, fine motor development and language and organization. ABA is compatible with other therapies. Integrating it with biomedical intervention, for which the C.A.R.D. Program is the model and can be extremely effective. ABA professionals are learning how to incorporated sensory integration into ABA henseforth most autistic children do have certain types of sensory issues. Mine sure do and I've even found myself to have a few.

EEG and ASD

>> Friday, March 27, 2009

In today's autism world, an EEG (electroencephalogram) can be useful. Individuals diagnosed with AD(H)D, learning disabilities and autism can learn how to control their brainwaves to sustain attention, increase concentration, improve sleep and decrease anxiety. Looks like I could use those three things. What about you? This is obtainable by super fast computers which are capable of handling real time data from the brain. How great is that?

Neurofeedback is a highly sophisticated version of biofeedback that allows the brain to "eavesdrop on itself" and learn how to alter it's own timing and the frequencies of its brainwave activity. Neurofeedback has emerged into a powerful therapy that teaches the brains of autism patients to function more efficient.

Brainwave frequencies are measured in cycles per second, or Hertz; therefore, one Hertz equals one cycle per second. EEG signals can be dominant; all occur simultaneously composed of many different frequencies, and are organized in frequency bands. The list below shows these bands and the mental state associated with each band, and may slightly vary from doctor to doctor.

Frequency Name, Cycles per second (Hertz), Mental State

Delta, <4, Sleep
Theta 4-7, Drowsy
Alpha 8-11, Inattentive
SMR ( Sensori-motor rhythm), 12-15, Calm
Beta, 16-20, Focused
High Beta, >20, Excited

Did you know that the brains with attention deficits demonstrate a dominance of low-freguency theta waves, which produce drowsy mental state, resulting in symptoms such as lethargy, poor focus, and compromised memory. That is right too many theta waves can disturb sleep making children feeling tired most of the time even a school.

Nurofeedback takes the form of a visual display with auditory signals, and occasionally tactile feedback. Visual display has the sole purpose of entertaining the subject and training the brain. This makes it possible for the training to proceed even with non-verbal individuals. The brain still tries to do its best (at an unconscious level) to adjust to the demands of its environment. regardless of the cognitive level of the person with autism and other spectrum disorders.

Types of neurofeedback can include hemoencephalography (blood-brain-image) or HEG, the Low Energy Neurofeedback System (LENS), and passive infrared thermal training (pIR). HEG uses a headband with infrared heat sensors that can detect blood flow within the brain. The LENSE system, invented by Len Ochs Ph.D, use a very low power electromagnetic fields, no larger than those that surround digital watches to carry feedback to the subject. MagNext Games

>> Thursday, March 26, 2009

On line games are the best when it comes to entertaining my oldest son with autism and ADHD. He loves magnetix as well. He really enjoys putting the cars together and crashing them to knock the balls off of them. Now he can go online and do the exact same thing. It is good for him I believe to use the computer to play games. It helps with his eye-hand coordination a lot. MagNext is the place for your kids to hang out and enjoy themselves. I will be showing this game of to my oldest son when he gets home from school. He will absolutely love to play it. I tried it out and I highly recommend playing the game. You can upgrade your "ball" character with hats and colors of different kinds. Playing with other people and having a buddy list really encourages the child as to having a type of social interaction with others online safely. You can add pre-set emoticons, and language text to enhance the buddy friendship stature. So grab the kids and hop on over to play. I am sure they will like it and have lots of wonderful fun with it, I surely had a lot of fun playing it myself. Made me feel like a kid again.

10 Things To Do With Your Autistic Child On Autism Awareness Day

>> Wednesday, March 25, 2009

April 2, 2009 is Autism Awareness Day!! So I thought that I would come up with a little to do list with your child on this special day. Hopefully you will find it interesting as much as I did putting it together.

10 Things To Do With Your Autistic Child on Autism Awareness Day

1.) Give your child a hug and kiss and tell them today is your day. You are special.
2.)Give thanks to your doctors and therapist by helping your child make a card.
3.) Go on an Autism Awareness Walk in your area. If there is not one create a walk with closest friends of the child.
4.) Read a children's book about their condition or any other type of book they enjoy. Age appropriate children want to learn more about their condition.
5.) Create an Autism Awareness Message on your vehicle, and add a link to your blog or another favorite website. I plan on doing this one.
6.) Donate to autism research. One of the most fulfilling things you can do.
7.) Bake an Autism Awareness Cake. Make sure that it is GFCF, and colors are of natural origin.
8.) Buy your child a favorite toy he does not have. It is sure to keep them busy for a few minutes while you at least sit down.
9.) Buy an Autism Awareness product for you and your child to wear on autism day, and during the month of April.
10.) Go fishing, shopping, or create your own idea. I am curious as to what you can come up with.

A Great Autism Meeting

Well guys, I went to the autism meeting last night, and it was a good one. The speaker, Dr. Callaghan, was talking about the biomedical approach to autism. He was talking to us on how to get started in the biomedical aspect of autistic children and how to heal their bodies... to feed a starving brain. Autism is contributed to many factors, and an unborn child is even still at risk for all of the chemicals that are transported from the mother to the unborn child. Pesticides and mercury are transported to the child causing harm already. Some children are just predisposed to have a weaker immune system that the environment triggers and causing autistic like behaviors. Treating a child with autism is difficult, from diets, to nutritional supplements, removal of metals in the body (chelation), and probiotics ( parasites in the digestive system) to break down materials in the body. Children with autism usually don't have enough of these probiotics to compensate for their bodily functions, and can be added to help the body rid itself of many bad things. Most can have parasites that also need to be treated. Yeast is also another problem with children with autism. Yeast can travel to the brain causing inflammation. An entire body affected by yeast, because the body can't rid itself of it without help. Medication and a lowered yeast diet can help rid the body of this potential problem. B12 is also very helpful with a child with autism since they have lowered amounts. Make sure that their B12 is checked. There is so much that can be done to help a child with autism so get those tests done to see what you can do to help the ones that you love. You may refer to other articles and posts that I can created to find out information on biomedical treatments that could potentially help you children and yourself.

Relationshiped-based Therapies

Stanley Greenspan, a child psychologist, developed The Developmental Individual Differences, Relationship-based Approach (DIR). The DIR offers a framework to assist parents and professionals in creating a comprehensive, intensive therapeutic program. It is also fully compatible with other therapies including biomedical intervention, occupational therapy, sound-based therapy and let us not forget vision therapy. While DIR focuses on the individual, they also focus on the entire family to help resolve family issues that may be interfering with a child's growth and development. Components of DIR falls into six categories.
1.) Shared attention- Utilize all the senses and motor abilities, stretching the child's capabilities for interaction.
2.) Engagement- Follow the child's lead, building upon pleasurable interactions. Match the child's rhythm, deepen the warmth, add physical closeness.
3.) Two-way purposeful interaction with gestures- Exaggerate emotion, become animated, support initiative, facilitate goal achievement.
4.) Two-way purposeful problem solving interaction- Add extra steps to play, such as acting dumb, playing obstructively and creating barriers, forcing the child to solve problems.
5.) Emotional ideas- Encourage imaginary play, combining words with ideas and affect with action.
6.) Emotional thinking- Building bridges between ideas and development of abstract reasoning. Challenge with "wh" questions. This high level of development is the ultimate goal for all children.

The individual differences that affect learning and behavior. They are as follows: auditory processing, gestural non-verbal language, ability to understand and use language, visual spacial processing, motor planning and sequencing, and sensory planning and sequencing, and sensory reactivity and modulation. The Dir approach assists caregivers in developing adult/child relationships, which then allows a child to develop meaningful relationships with peers and siblings. According to Greenspan, all individuals categorize experiences by their sensory and affective qualities.

Sensory perception focuses on physical properties (bright, loud, big smooth, etc.) and emotional qualities may be perceived as soothing, jarring, happy, tense, etc. DIR focuses on the child's ability to interact with others. Our interaction malfunction would be getting along with each other (parents and sibling). Guess well be working on that one. We are riding a bumpy road, but with faith we will make it through. The primary goal of DIR-based intervention program is to enable children to form a sense of themselves as intentional, interactive individuals, and to develop cognitive language and social capacities. The heart of DIR is Floortime that have guidelines to allow the child to develop spontaneous interactive behaviors that are purposeful and intentional. They include:
1.) Follow the child's lead- do what the child does, he is the leader. If he spins, take his hand and do a little dance.
2.) Join the child's developmental level and build on his natural interests- treat whatever the child is doing as intentional and purposeful.
3.) Open and close circles of communication- When a child avoids or rejects adult interaction, treat is as an error. Say, "Oh you don't want this!Sorry! Here try this toy."
4.) Help the child do what he wants to do- Guide by putting hand over hand. Work face-to-face, or at a mirror so the child can see adult expressions. When a child is purposeful, hand him another object.
5.) Create a play environment- focus on creative interaction; avoid structured games.
6.) Extend the circles of communication- interact in such ways that help a child reach individual goals such as obtaining a toy.
7.) Broaden the child's range of interactive experience- extend the child's desire to expand upon emotional, sensory, and motor responses.
8.) Tailor interactions to a child's unique sensory processing differences- assess the child's sensory difficulties and add sensory play using balls, whistles, bubbles, etc.
9.) Mobilize the six developmental stages simultaneously- share attention, engage the child with gestures and pre-verbal problem-solving to encourage two-way purposeful interaction, emotions, ideas and thinking.

A lot of the DRI intervention takes place in the home. Parents, caregivers, and therapists typically interact with children in Floortime activities for at least 20 minutes eight or more times a day. For children attending school, the program can integrate into the classroom which allows interactions with typically developing children when the child was ready. A balanced DIR program includes both spontaneous and semi-structured activities designed to facilitate mastery of specific processing abilities, and emotional, congitive language and motor skills. DIR includes structured activities at least three times a day to address the following areas: motor and sensory skills, balance, coordination and left-right integration, rhythm, modulation, and visual-spatial skills. For those interested, go to icdl.com.

Relational Development Intervention ( RDI) was developed by Steven E. Gutstein. Like DIR, RID educates and coaches adults to interact and work with children on the ASD spectrum. The goal of RDI is the remediation of specific deficits that define ASD by creating numerous daily opportunities for a child to respond in a flexible thoughtful way. The RDI consists of nine different elements:
1.) Diagnostic evaluation
2.) Parent education
3.) RDI program planning
4.) Consultation
5.) Parents use RDI as a lifestyle and function as facilitators
6.) Children work individually with adults, and then in therapeutic peer dyads or groups when ready.
7.) Episodic memory
8.) Emphasis on Self Development
9.) The RDI Program is a primary intervention.

Goals of the RDI Program include: understanding and appreciate the many levels of experience sharing, become an equal partner in co-regulating experience sharing interactions, value the uniqueness of others' perspectives, ideas, and feelings, work to maintain enduring relationships, become adaptable and flexible in both social and non-social problem solving, and recognize that their own unique identity can continue to grow and develop.

Lyte Kaufman and his family, established The Option Institute and The Autism Treatment Center of America, where they have been offering the Son-Rise Program since 1983. The Son-Rise Program is based on the idea that adults must enter the world of autism instead of asking the child with autism to enter the "real" world. By mirroring repetitive and ritualistic behaviors and interacting with the child through play, accompanied by a optimistic, trusting, respectful, and non-judgmental attitude of love and enthusiasm, adults can gradually lead a child tword a more normal life. Parents are encouraged to explore their own belief systems and to question judgments that limit them. The guiding principles are listed and described below;
1.) Autism is a relational, not a behavioral-disorder- Son Rise views autism as an interactional disorder in which children have difficulty relating and connecting to those around them.
2.) Motivation, not repetition, hold the key to all learning- Son Rise strives to uncover each child's unique motivations, and use these to teach children the skills they need to learn.
3.) "Stimming" behaviors have important meaning and value- son-Rise accepts and respects children's behaviors.
4.) Parents are the child's best resources- nothing equals the power of the parent.
5.) Parents and professionals are most effective when they feel comfortable with a child, optimistic about a child's capabilities and hopeful about the child's future- caring professionals often do not have the resources, guidance, or support they need to help the children they are working with.
6.) All children can progress in the right environment- most children on the ASD spectrum are over stimulated by plethora of distractions that others do not even notice.
7.) A child's potential is limitless- Son-Rise focuses parents on their own attitudes striving to help them reclaim their optimism and hopefulness, and see the potential in their children.

Carol Gray developed Social Stories to help individuals with autism learn to "read" and understand social situations by answering questions, "who", "what", "when", "where" and "why" to a variety of situations presented in the form of stories. The goal of Social Stories is to impart accurate social information in a patient and reassuring manner, not to challenge an individuals behavior. Social Stories uses four types of sentences that are named to described below.
1.) Descriptive sentences- express what people do in a particular social situations. Ex. " When the bell rings, the children come in from recess and go to their classrooms, where the teacher reads a story."
2.) Directive sentences- move a person toward a desired appropriate social response. Ex. " When the bell rings, I stop playing and line up to come in from recess.
3.) Perspective sentences- present others' reactions to a situation so that the individual can learn how others' perceive various events. Ex. " The teacher is happy to see all the children line up quietly and walk to their classroom."
4.) Control sentences- identifies strategies the person can use to facilitate memory and comprehension of the social story. Ex. "I remember that the bell means it's time for recess to end by thinking of a teapot. I know that when it whistles, the water is done. The bell is like a whistle; when it rings, recess is done.

The Miller Method, developed by Arnold Miller, a Boston psychologist, gradually transforms a child's limited reality systems by expanding his/her repertoire of activities. As a child with autism gradually tolerates and accepts new reality systems through repeative activities, and can make transitions from event to event without distress, the ability to cope with different life situations improves dramatically. Miller has developed specialized training systems and instructional equipment to help children maximize their capability to learn. The Miller Method uses two major strategies to restore typical developmental progressions. The first extinguishes children's aberrant systems such as lining up blocks, and transforms them into functional behavior such as putting blocks into cups. The other introduces developmentally appropriate activities involving objects and people to fill in the gaps in development.

My Birthday Day

I had a wonderful birthday. My day started out good. I woke up at 6 am to check email and everything. I still felt tired so I went back to bed until about 9 when Devin woke up. The boys were good today, except for a few times when they just could not leave each other alone.

Most of the afternoon, I was scrambling to get the house clean, because I had called mom to let her know that I needed a babysitter on the 23rd so that I could go to the autism meeting that I had planned on going to for two months now.

Mom said that Ryan wanted to go watch a movie. He's my brother. Just got his first car, but I do not even know what kind it is. Just that it does have one headlight out so they didn't bring it. So we agreed to go out for dinner and a movie for my birthday. She said that she would be back for me to go to the meeting. So I am greatful that she will make two trips for me.

While I was washing the dishes, I had wished that mom would bring me the chairs she had given to me months ago. To my surprise, within an hour he she comes bringing me my chairs for my kitchen table. Yipppeeee I got my birthday wish. LOL.

So what movie did we see? The Knowing. It was a good movie, but having to sit so close was torture on the eyes. Especially mine since I am sensitive to lights. I had to cover my ears a few times because it was so loud. I have sound sensitivities as well. To bad for me.

Well, guess I had a pretty good 29th birthday! Would also like to say happy birthday to my Uncle Bobby who had a birthday on the 20th. The day before mine. Usually, we celebrate them together when we are together. We did this a lot when I was a kid and the last time we did, I was turning 15. Been a long time Uncle Bobby, so I hope that you had a good birthday as well.

You Tube Debute and The Love of Transformers

My husband has created a video he calls, "Transformer Nemisis Tribute." He has always loved the Transformers ever since he was a child. It was 2000 when he bought his first collecting Transformer. He bought Optimus Prime, just before my oldest son was born. He said that he will pass his collection to them. The collection has grown to over 200 figures in and out of boxes that fill our lovely bedroom. He is also into collecting videos of Transformers T.V. shows. His favorite characters are Star Saber and Dethzaurus from Transformers Victory, a Japanese cartoon. The entire family including myself have grown to love them as well. We would really appreciate if you would watch his "Transformer Nemisis Tribute" video. He is very excited to be on You Tube and would like to see more views. The video works well with the music and he did a great job, plus there is already more in the making. You are always allowed to add comments here as well. Thanks for watching!!!

Relationship-based intervention with Rebecca Klaw

>> Thursday, March 19, 2009

Play is fueled by social interaction, and serves as the basis for early learning. The child at play is very complex and engage in activities that develops skills and builds, bit by bit concepts as complicated as physics and essential as empathy. Children with autism have difficulty learning from others how to expand their play, and need to learn through patient and skilled adults, how to play.

Have a child who wants to be left alone when he plays is quite common. These children have social difficulties that makes it hard for you to interact with them. Insist that they play with you . They need to be guided moreable ways to explore all aspects of their world, not just how to manipulate objects, but how to share, build, pretend, elaborate, invent, describe and create. Some of the ways to engage children with ASD in play is by heightening interest, be persistent, include repetition, establish routines, add sensory stimulation, minimize language, and most importantly have fun. Rebecca Klaw has a DVD collection on relationship-based intervention and also visit her website to see her schedule of training nationwide.

Autism Doctor Plans To Come To Tupelo, MS

>> Wednesday, March 18, 2009

As some may know from reading other articles that I have posted that Dr. Tim Callaghan of Senatobia, Mississippi will be speaking at the next autism meeting in Tupelo, MS. He was featured in our local paper. The Daily Journal captured the interview, as he said that, " At this point, we no longer use the term DAN doctor, so we now call ourselves biomedical doctors. What we practice is a biomedical approach to autism. Biomedical means that we don't believe that autism is an entirely genetic , fixed permanent, psychological state of being."

We are hoping that locals will come visit Dr. Callaghan who will be able to answer questions that parents may have. I hope that you will be able to go to the meeting that is held on March 23, 2009 at 6:00p.m. at the Lee County Library. Hope to see you there.

The Lego Helicopter

Devin, my six year old, decided to collect the little bitty Lego pieces that were scattered in the boxes of millions of little toys in his room. Oh how wonderful that he decided to do this. After collecting piece by piece he built this wonderful looking Lego helicopter. He loves flying things, but helicopters are his favorite. Wonder where he gets that from. I love to fly as well, but dad is probably to scared to even try it. HAHAHA!! He's more of a ground type person. I did get him to allow some pictures. I am amazed at his no frustration behavior while building and playing with his "new" toy. So here his is little helicopter. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do. As always, comments are welcome. He would love to see someone else who adored his little helicopter as much as his mom and dad did.
